Gabions

WHAT IS A GABION:

The word gabion comes from the Italian 'gabbione' which literally translates as “big cage”, and this is essentially what they are – cage-like enclosures filled with inorganic material like stone, flint, brick, or broken concrete. A cage, cylinder or box filled with rocks, concrete, or sometimes sand and soil for use in civil engineering, road building, military applications and landscaping.

Gabions are designed to be used in permanent structures but their longevity is directly related to the environment they are installed in. they were originally used for protecting riverbanks and shorelines but nowadays they are used as retaining walls in gardens as well as purely aesthetic reasons. They are way to build walls and other similar structures in your own space to your own design. The life expectancy of gabion walls can be anywhere from 10 to 75 years depending on the installation environment.
